Odd training techniques (but not as odd as Tony Ferguson’s) and thoughts on the coronavirus pandemic from four professional fighters

The Fighters

Aviv Gozali Israeli lightweight with Bellator, aka The King (4-0)

Chris Brennan Ex-UFC fighter, aka The Westside Strangler (21-14-1)

Eddie Gordon Jamaican middleweight ex-UFC, currently PFL (8-7)

Jason Radcliffe English middleweight with KSW, aka The Assassin (16-7)

Some of Tony Ferguson’s eccentric training techniques have come to light recently. What’s the most interesting thing you do in the gym?

Gozall

A I didn’t watch any of Tony Ferguson’s eccentric training, I just heard about. I’m doing a lot of pad work on the treadmill if that counts.

Brennan

A In the gym, we don’t do too much crazy stuff. We do a lot of incline harness work outside, with resistance bands and things like that. A lot of wall work and shot timing.

Gordon

A Nothing compares to Tony. I’m very traditional. We just add a little twist of humor and lots of fun in our training but nothing like Tony.

Radcliffe

A Well, I can’t say I’ve gone as far as Tony but I would say I’ve got these glasses which have lenses that flicker at different speeds so I “hit” pads using those. That’s my level of crazy ATM.

With the Coronavirus pandemic sweeping all around the globe, how has your training changed?

Gozall

A I came back to Israel from New York because of the virus, so I have time off now because of that.

Brennan

A Sadly it has changed a lot. My gym is closed at the moment, so me and the boys go train a bit, but not too much. I’m trying to make videos as much as possible to keep my gym and the rest of the world in the loop and learning.

Gordon

A Coronavirus is horrible. It shut me down completely. No training, no fights, no clients no income, no bueno!

Radcliffe

A This pandemic has come at the worst time for MMA. As we speak, London has gone into lockdown which needed to happen. Also, all gyms are now closed so training is now “training at home” or “park”. I’m awaiting surgery, so since September I’ve limited my training anyway.

How has the virus affected your everyday lifestyle?

Gozall

A I have been sitting at home for two weeks already.

Brennan

A Lifestyle-wise, not much has changed. The only difference is not teaching every day. I don’t drink or go to bars, or use excessive amounts of toilet paper, so not much has changed. I love to teach though, so I’m missing that.

Gordon

A The virus made the world hit reset. We have to recalibrate our values and determine what’s important. I have been spending a lot more time with family.

Radcliffe

A This virus has changed a lot with social distancing and gyms being closed. It just gives me more time to train mentally. I can never get out of shape but the mind can definitely get out of sync.

What are you doing to fill the combat sports void in your life right now?

Gozall

A I’m just playing Call of Duty all day long!

Brennan

A I’m watching some old fights and I also watch Lucas’s fights a lot as well to make sure we are always improving.

Gordon

A Man, I’ve been focused on some of my other passions including motivational videos, speeches and building an affordable mentor program online.

Radcliffe

A Right now, its more family time and mental training. That also means a lot of fight homework like watching a lot of of the KSW middleweight division.

How soon do you think the fight game will get back to normal?

Gozall

A I hope by May everything is gonna be back to normal.

Brennan

A Man, I have no idea but I hope soon. We had some canceled fights, so hopefully within the next month or so.

Gordon

A The fight game will get back to normal as soon as this pandemic is under control. Fighting is in our DNA. It’s second nature.

Radcliffe

A Fingers crossed this virus clears first by next month. We might see more closed events but only top of the chain shows will be able to pull though.
