I really like him and I believe he’s probably the greatest heavyweight of all time, at this point. He’s beaten some of the best in the history of his division and he’s the current UFC champion, so why wouldn’t he be considered the best ever?
His flying knee against Mark Hunt was perfect and showed how he’s developed into a really accomplished striker. He also beat up Cain Velasquez before he then tapped him out too. It’s great to see a Brazilian jiu-jitsu-based fighter be so dangerous in all different areas of mixed martial arts.
Werdum has fought a select group of heavyweight ‘kings’ during his incredible career, and he’s slain them all. That should mean he’s now become the new king and so I wouldn’t disagree with that assessment at all. Werdum is the greatest.

With wins over some of the other all-time greats – Cain Velasquez, Mark Hunt, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Fedor Emelianenko, Alistair Overeem – at this point in history he could be considered the greatest of all time. The only reason he doesn’t stand out to me as the greatest is his lack of star power. Some of the names Werdum beat had extended reigns as champions and that’s why some of the guys he beat still stand out to me.
When I think of the greatest of all time, Fedor is still the name that resonates with me the most. That’s simply for his long period of dominance. When you look at Werdum’s record, there’s a lot of wins, but there are losses every few fights. Fedor had one of the longest unbeaten runs ever, with just one loss at the beginning and only a few at the end – then more wins.
