The truck-driving, old school rap-loving, movie-queuing, sports-fanatic UFC welterweight champion reveals all about his Florida lifestyle.

TV

What TV shows or series are you currently watching?

“None right now, really. I used to watch a few but I really have to get into them. I am so busy right now that it has been hard. I watched Spartacus. I watch a lot of HBO or Showtime stuff. I just don’t have time right now. If I’m not training I’m spending time with my family. I like a lot of the HBO series’. There are really good shows on there.”

If you could appear on any TV show what would it be?

“I am going to go with a current show and say something in the action genre. I would say I would want to be on Showtime’s House of Lies.”

What sports do you keep up with on TV these days?

“We went to get pizza yesterday and went back to the hotel and turned on the Australian Open. I went back, turned it on and fell asleep. I watch tennis, soccer, basketball, football and a little bit of baseball, so I watch a lot of sports actually.”

CARS

What was the first car you owned?

“My dad got it for me, it was a 1986 Chevy Celebrity.”

What kind of car do you drive today?

“I drive a 2013 Ram 1500 crew cab. It’s sweet. I don’t speed around. I don’t get speeding tickets, I just cruise around. It’s nice.”

What is your dream car… or truck?

“I don’t even know. Something all-wheel drive. Maybe a nice Audi. Maybe a nice Porsche with all-wheel drive. I kind of like small SUVs, if they are smooth and fast.”

MUSIC

What kind of music are you listening to now?

“Right now I am listening to Coffee House, David Gray kind of stuff to just chill out and hang out listening to. I used to listen to rap all the time when I was younger. Now I gravitate towards other stuff. I also listen to classic rock. I have listened to classic rock my whole life. My dad used to always put it on and that’s what we listened to in the car.”

Has your taste in music changed over the years?

“I mean, I still listen to rap but mostly older stuff, the ‘80s and ‘90s stuff. I have gravitated away from the new rap stuff. I listen to country here and there. I try to be well rounded and keep my ears and my options open.”

If you could walk out to one song for the rest of your career what track would it be and why?

“I just switched to Sam and Dave’s Hold On, I’m Coming. It fits me right now. Before that I was using Eminem’s Beautiful which I really like but that was a chapter in my life that has passed so I am moving on.”

Is there a guilty pleasure song there that we would be surprised to find?

“Not really. I don’t listen to stuff I don’t like.”

No Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga?

“No, I don’t listen to anything like that. Plus I just got a new phone, so there isn’t much on there. Usually, I put it on Pandora and click thumbs up or thumbs down.”

STYLE

How would you describe your style?

“It seems like I wear the same stuff over and over. It’s pretty much just workout clothes. I usually throw on the workout clothes like tights and throw on shorts and a shirt over top of it and go to practice.”

What about when you go out for dinner or on the town?

“If I go out somewhere nice or halfway-dressy, like to dinner or a restaurant I usually wear a pair of nice jeans and a button up Seven Diamonds shirt and some nice kicks.”

MOVIES

Is there a certain type of movie you gravitate towards?

“I like action movies. I like guys just going in there and wreaking havoc. I just watched that new Denzel Washington movie (The Equalizer), it’s kind of like The Specialist, where he’s a bad ass and he goes around and does his thing.”

What’s the last movie you saw and did you enjoy it?

“ I just watched The Gambler with Mark Wahlberg too. I actually wanted to see American Sniper but it was sold out that day. The Gambler was pretty good. I watched the newest Sin City recently too, and that was a pretty good movie. I like action and comedies mostly.”

If there was a movie about the life of Robbie Lawler who would play you?

“I have no idea! Do you go with looks? Do you go with a physical character? Do you go with a real true actor? You want it to turn out well, so that’s tough. You want to look good. I don’t know.”

You could play yourself...

“I said I wanted a good actor. I’m not a good actor. I would ruin it. It would go straight to VHS... (laughs) that’s how bad it would be, straight to VHS.”
