FO spends a month tracking... Cub Swanson. The leading featherweight contender moves a huge step closer to a shot at the UFC belt

JUNE 2014

SUNDAY 1ST

In preparation for his upcoming UFC Fight Night main event against Jeremy Stephens on June 28th, Cub enjoys the cleanest diet of his 10-year pro career. On the menu today is seitan, a wheat-based meat substitute. In the evening, Swanson enjoys some NHL action as the Los Angeles Kings take on the Chicago Blackhawks.

TUESDAY 3RD

The top 145lb contender does some hard cardio training out in the sun at the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, at an altitude of 8,500 feet. “Sprints at the top of the Palm Springs Tramway. 8,500 Feet kicks my Ass,” he posts.

SATURDAY 7TH

Cub travels to Albuquerque where he will complete the remainder of his fight camp with the Jackson-Winkeljohn team. He ends the evening attending UFC Fight Night 42 to support teammates like John Dodson and Diego Sanchez, where Hollywood star Mel Gibson is also in attendance.

THURSDAY 12TH

The golf-mad featherweight veteran takes some time out from his tough training schedule to hit the fairways with his custom Powerbilt Golf ‘Killer Cub’ clubs.

SATURDAY 14TH

Spends the day training at 11,000 feet with TUF 16 winner Colton Smith, ensuring his cardio will be up to par for his five-round fight at the end of the month. Later spends his second Saturday evening in a row enjoying some UFC action – this time from the comfort of the couch as UFC 174 unfolds in Vancouver, Canada.

FRIDAY 20TH

At the tail end of another tough week of training, Cub does a session with head striking coach Mike Winkeljohn. “Was inspired today by @CubSwanson he will become champ soon!” tweets coach Winkeljohn. “I’m honored to have you as a coach @mmacoachwink,” posts Swanson in response.

TUESDAY 24TH

It’s fight week! Cub is given a ride to the airport by friend and fellow UFC star Clay Guida. He arrives in San Antonio some hours later but still finds time to squeeze in some grocery shopping for a supply of healthy foods in the final week of weight cutting.

THURSDAY 26TH

Just a few days removed from the fight, Cub shows off his skills to the fans with coach Winkeljohn at the UFC workouts.

SATURDAY 28TH

Having weighed in at an ultra-lean 145lb the previous day, Cub enters the Octagon opposite Jeremy Stephens in fantastic shape. Over a hard-fought five rounds Swanson proves himself to be the more skilled and diverse fighter, earning a unanimous decision win and making a strong case for himself as a championship contender.
