FO gets one of the newest members of the UFC’s female division to spill the beans on her love for ’90s metal and her unhealthy shoe-buying addiction
CARS
What was the first car you owned and how much did it cost?
“My first car was a Sunfire (Pontiac). I’ve always been very good with money and I saved all my cash from summer jobs that year (to help pay for it). I think it cost something like $8,500.”
What car do you own now and what made you buy it?
“Right now I drive a Dodge Neon. I bought it because I moved to California so I figured it was time I bought my own car (laughs). I’m lucky enough that I can steal my boyfriend’s car all the time too, because he has a 2012 Jeep Patriot which is a bit more fun.”
If you could have any car in the world, what would you drive?
“I would probably drive something like a hybrid because I train so much (laughs). It would be so good for gas.”
If you could pimp out your ride with anything in the world, what would it be?
“I’d pimp an old-school Austin Mini with a computer, a sweet sound system, I’d put some nice rims on that thing. It definitely wouldn’t be a very family-friendly car (laughs).”
MUSIC
What type of music are you into?
“I’m pretty sure everyone says it, but I pretty much listen to everything, it just depends on my mood. I like a lot of classic rock and that’s what I’ve been listening to a lot right now, stuff from the ’90s – alternative stuff. I heard Boston on the radio the other day and remembered how much I love them, and Cream, so I like a lot of old school stuff.”
Has your music taste changed over the years?
“It really has changed. When I was younger and because of my sister’s influence, she would dress like a goth and I ended up doing the same. I started listening to Nine Inch Nails, Korn, Slipknot. Then I got a job working with my mother at her high school and she’d listen to a lot of classic rock. My dad has millions of CDs and when I go home now we’ll sit there, chill out and talk and listen to music.”
What’s your favorite Nine Inch Nails album?
“I don’t think they’ve ever made a bad album, but I’m more into the older stuff, so I’d probably say Pretty Hate Machine.”
Why Pretty Hate Machine? We thought you’d be more of a The Downward Spiral type of lady.
“I love that one too, it’s one of my favorite ones also. I think I love Pretty Hate Machine because it was the album that got me into Nine Inch Nails and it’s still one of my favorites.”
What song is your guilty pleasure?
“When me and my sister were younger we’d sing Sunshine, Lollipops and Rainbows by Lesley Gore. I still love that song. I think it was on The Simpsons too.”
STYLE
So what type of stuff do you wear when you’re outside of the cage?
“Honestly, I’m terrible when it comes to fashion and style. Half the time I call my friends and ask them if they’ve got anything I can borrow if I need to go somewhere (laughs). I do really, really love shoes though.”
How many pairs do you own?
“Shoes are like my guilty, fashion pleasure. I really love a nice pair of high heels. I’m not used to it now, not as much as I used to be. I just looked on the floor and I’ve got something like 12 different pairs of shoes here. I used to be able to wear shoes with longer heels, but I can’t really do that anymore. I can only wear them for a couple of hours, but I absolutely love them still.”
We’ve noticed that you’ve got some pretty cool tattoos. What exactly are they?
“I’ve got two tattoos. I’ve got two blue lotus flowers on my back and I have a female samurai on a horse on my ribcage. The female samurai starts from my hip, but the sword that she’s holding goes just above my bra line. It’s just line work, there’s no shading done on it.”
Would you ever consider getting any shading done?
“I don’t think so. I love the lines just the way they are because that’s how they were drawn up. It’s more of a classic, Japanese-style look.”
TV
What TV shows have you been watching lately?
“I rarely have time to watch TV, but when I did have a little more time on my hands I really enjoyed The Walking Dead and Sons of Anarchy. I’m really into the whole zombie apocalypse thing. My brother and I talk about what we’d do if a zombie apocalypse happened all the time.”
Were you ever into Buffy The Vampire Slayer?
“I watched Buffy, for sure. I used to watch all those sort of shows like Dracula and John Carpenter’s Vampires. I used to love all that sort of stuff.”
If you could be in any TV show, past or present, what would it be?
“It would’ve been really cool to have been in Buffy. I’d like to be a villain in something because it would be a little different from what people expect from me. I wouldn’t want to have a big role, but it would be cool to have a little appearance in the show. Playing a zombie on The Walking Dead would be pretty cool too.”
Besides from MMA, do you watch any other sport on TV?
“No, not really. We don’t really watch too much TV in our apartment (laughs). I was never really into watching a lot of sports, although I don’t mind soccer.”
FLICKS
What type of movies are you into?
“I like a bit of everything, but I really like the whole fantasy thing. I love Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, that sort of stuff. I’m not into the whole Twilight thing though if I’m honest (laughs). I think I saw the first two, but I really wasn’t impressed.
“One of my favorite movies is The Departed. I love films by Martin Scorcese and, of course, Quentin Tarantino.”
What’s your favorite Quentin Tarantino flick?
“I really love Death Proof. Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill and Django Unchained are really great films too. I really love how Tarantino makes his movies, the way he incorporates a lot of old-school filmmaking techniques and makes them seem fresh.
“I’d probably say the reason why I like Death Proof so much is because Rosario Dawson axe kicks Kurt Russell in the head at the very end of the movie (laughs).”
If there was a movie made about your life, who would you want to play you, and why?
“It would have to be someone who could probably pull off the fight scenes. Someone like Jennifer Garner, or the woman from Underworld, Kate Beckinsale. I’ve been told that I look like both of them somewhat.”
What was the last movie you watched and what did you think of it?
“My boyfriend and I just went to watch G.I Joe. It was OK, it didn’t have the best acting, but I like Bruce Willis so it wasn’t that bad. If it was my choice we would’ve gone to see Jurassic Park 3D.”
If you could punch any actor or actress in the face, who would it be and why?
“I’m not really up-to-date on the whole celebrity world, but if I had to choose someone it would probably be Lindsay Lohan. She makes you want to give her a slap and ask her, ‘What’s wrong with you? Pull your s**t together (laughs).’”
SHUFFLE
HIT SHUFFLE AND TELL US ABOUT THE FIRST FIVE SONGS. NO CHEATING
Static-X, In a Bag
“I really enjoyed a lot of Static-X, especially when I was in my metal stage. I really enjoy this album too. It really gets your blood flowing.”
White Zombie, I’m Your Boogie Man
“It’s got a really cool vibe to it. It’s kind of chilled, but it can still get your head moving a little bit. I really like the Supersexy Swingin’ Sounds EP they made.”
System of a Down, P.L.U.C.K
“They’re a great band and this is an awesome song. I haven’t heard much from them recently though. It’s definitely a song I’d work out to. It makes me want to punch somebody.”
Korn, Helmet In The Bush
“My sister was the biggest Korn fan, she had a Korn tape that she made and I probably began liking them even more because of her.”
Led Zeppelin, I Can’t Quit You Baby
“I was really big into Led Zeppelin for a while. Pretty much anything by Led Zeppelin was great. It was a different age in music and it felt like musicians had a little more soul in their music during that time.”
