Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard II was anticipated as a five-round snoozefest between two closely-matched wrestlers, but what transpired at UFC 125 on New Year’s Day was the most heart-pounding back-and-forth war of 2011.

After Frankie was beaten to the brink of unconsciousness in the first round, he showed the heart of a true champion and fought back hard, winning the second and dominating the majority of the remaining three rounds.

The end result was a draw and, though fans’ opinions were divided, there were no complaints at the promise of a rematch – teeing up Edgar’s incredible victory in their third fight at the back end of the year, crowning a highlight-reel trilogy courtesy of a brutal KO.

“Ending a fight on a draw is kind of bittersweet. You didn’t win but you didn’t lose”

 Frankie Edgar

“I thought that was my fight. I thought I had the belt. I worked my ass off for this. I guess it kinda hurts”

Gray Maynard
