Patricky Pitbull walked into Peter Queally’s back yard at the 3Arena and did something no other fighter had ever accomplished to capture the Bellator lightweight title at Bellator 270.

Hometown hero Queally had never been stopped in his 19-fight MMA career prior to Friday night’s title fight in Dublin. But Patricky, brother of former lightweight and featherweight champ Patricio, picked up where his brother left off by finishing Queally via second-round knockout to hand the Irishman his first career stoppage defeat and in the process capture the vacant lightweight title.

Patricky’s brother Patricio took the decision to relinquish the lightweight belt after losing his featherweight title to A.J. McKee in the final of the featherweight grand prix earlier this year. It meant that Patricky, as the top-ranked lightweight contender, was handed the opportunity to continue the family’s title lineage by facing Queally in a rematch of their bout at Bellator 258 in May.

Queally won that bout via TKO stoppage due to cuts, but Patricky returned the favor in the rematch as he started fast, maintained his pace and, after a brief pause to recover from an accidental eye poke early in the second round, exploded with a big right hand that put Queally in trouble.

Pitbull then moved in and finished his man against the cage to earn the stoppage win and claim the vacant strap.

Pitbull’s victory over Queally headlined an 11-fight card at the 3Arena, with the Dublin crowd living up to the hype as the Irish fans generated another unforgettable atmosphere. Unfortunately for those fans, however, the two top Irish stars on the card were unable to capture the victories their passionate fans were hoping for.

In the co-main event of the evening, Patchy Mix prevailed in the battle of bantamweight submission specialists as he silenced the arena with a third-round submission of James Gallagher.

The pair battled back and forth in a fascinating matchup that saw both men look to lock up guillotine choke submissions. Mix came close to locking one up in Round 1, while Gallagher went big on a guillotine attempt of his own in Round 2.

On those occasions the threatened fighter managed to escape but, when Mix locked up a guillotine early in Round 3 and rolled over to apply more pressure, “The Strabanimal” had little option but to tap as the American registered his 15th professional win, and the 11th submission finish of his career.

The Dublin crowd was on their feet for SBG featherweight and former title challenger Pedro Carvalho, who overcame some early adversity to secure a unanimous decision victory over two-time title challenger and 53-fight veteran Daniel Weichel in their 145-pound clash.

Carvalho was looking to snap his two-fight skid and re-establish himself as a contender in Bellator’s stacked featherweight division, and the Dublin-based Portuguese fighter did just that as he recovered from a tough first round to earn scores of 29-28 on all three cards as he bounced back into the win column and took his record to 12-5.

Kicking off the main card, Dutch striker Ilias Bulaid was made to work for his win as he was pushed all the way to the scorecards by French debutant Georges Sasu as he earned a split-decision victory to improve his perfect professional record to 3-0.
