TUF 10 winner Roy Nelson is known for his belly bulge, but his relentless performances in the cage prove fat doesn’t mean unfit.
And yes, new research from the University of South Carolina backs that up, proving that certain overweight people are as healthy as average-sized people.
The study looked at 43,265 Americans from 1979 to 2003, and measured their weight using body mass index (BMI) and body fat percentage (BFP).
It found 30.8% of the participants obese on the BMI scale were actually metabolically healthy, whilst 46.3% on the BFP scale were too.
There were no differences between the healthy obese people and the healthy average weight people.
So, as in the case of Nelson, looks can be deceiving.
