Detroit will host Max Holloway’s first defense of his UFC featherweight title on December 2, it was confirmed today.
A fight between Holloway and former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar will take place at the Little Caesars Arena and headline UFC 218, an event which also includes the meeting of heavyweight juggernauts Alistair Overeem and Francis Ngannou.
Still only 25, Hawaiian Holloway is on an 11-fight win streak and hasn’t lost since he dropped a competitive decision to Conor McGregor back in 2013. Since then he has gone from strength to strength and improved exponentially. In June, ‘Blessed’, 18-3, finally achieved his goal of becoming undisputed lightweight king with a stunning knockout of the great Brazilian Jose Aldo.
Thirty-five-year-old Edgar, meanwhile, a man who has twice come up short against Aldo, won the UFC lightweight title in 2010 with an upset win over another Hawaiian, BJ Penn, in Abu Dhabi. After losing the title to Benson Henderson, Edgar, 22-5-1, dropped to featherweight in 2013 and has scored notable wins against the likes of Cub Swanson, Urijah Faber, Chad Mendes and, last time out, the highly-touted Yair Rodriguez.
