1) Determine what weight class you want to cut to. Be realistic, if you weigh as much as Shane Carwin you’re probably not going to be able to make welterweight (unless you’re a physical paradox like Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson).
2) Cut weight over a 12-week period. Losing weight quickly will only result in lost muscle mass rather than reduced body fat.
3) Considering you’re already in a decent shape, you can only lose 2–3lb of fat per week so don’t be tempted to start cutting water weight until 24 hours before the weigh-in. If you do this, you’re body will naturally put it back on as you re-hydrate.
4) Chew your food. It promotes healthier digestion and helps it pass through the body easier. As the body can store up to 25lb of faeces, you don’t want to be constipated come the weigh-in.
5) To lose the weight of stored faeces, try eating large amounts of natural laxatives such as prunes. Or you could try colonic irrigation, providing you don’t mind the intrusiveness.
6) Eat six small meals a day rather than three large. This will fuel your body much better as it will not be overloaded with food in one sitting and therefore nutrients will not be wasted.
7) Don’t completely eliminate fat. A minimum of 10% of diet calories should come from fat. Good fats include olive oil (unheated), avocados, peanuts, pistachios, Omega 3 (fish) and a moderate consumption of eggs.
8) Eat slowly to give you a sense of fullness.
9) Dieting and intense workouts lower the immune system. Supplement your diet with a good one-a-day multivitamin.
10) In the final 24 hours, start cutting water and dehydrate your body to shed those last several pounds. Try a sauna or a steady workout but remember not to blow yourself out; you’re fighting in just under two days!
NOTE: After the weigh-in, you need to replenish your body slowly.
Eat very small meals every hour over a 14-hour period.
Top Tip: Want to eat healthy but salad doesn't set your world alight?
Try pouring on some olive oil and a sprinkle of salt and pepper. Not only will this enhance flavor but the olive oil will prompt the body to burn brown fat cells and stall hunger pangs.
