Use the De La Riva open guard to sweep and get into position for a submission.
Vinny Magalhaes, BJJ champion and light heavyweight fighter, reveals his best tips for grappling in the gi with Scott Kaplan.
1 - Vinny establishes De La Riva guard by grabbing Scott’s right ankle and left sleeve, as well as using his left foot to hook the inner thigh.
2 - Vinny shoots his left leg deeper and hooks Scott’s far hip. With his right leg, he hooks the back of the knee to stop Scott back stepping.
3 - Vinny rolls to his back, elevates Scott with his legs and pulls the sleeve, forcing Scott to base with his right hand.
4 - To take away Scott’s balance, Vinny switches his grip and pulls Scott’s right arm towards himself.
5 - As Scott hits the mat, Vinny rolls over his shoulder to finish in a dominant position on top.
6 - Vinny transitions to the scarf hold position to secure his advantage and search for a submission.

PURPLE BELT
You can use the reverse De La Riva – also known as the spiral guard – by hooking your opponent’s lead leg with your other foot.
BLACK BELT
