Is UFC heavyweight Travis Browne’s new cornerman Clark Kent, because he’s just unleashed the deadliest superman punch we’ve ever seen!
As MMA fighters develop more and more into uber athletes, capable of not only knocking you out but complementing it with a flip to add insult to injury, the UFC hasn’t exactly been short of superhero-inspired moves. Last year we had Anthony Pettis’ Matrix kick, then recently we were graced with Pablo ‘The Scarecrow’ Garza’s flying triangle and how can we forget the precision, grace and brutality delivered match after match by the likes of Georges St Pierre, Anderson Silva and Jon ‘Bones’ Jones.
Now, proving even the big guys can deliver fight moves straight out of a comic book, UFC heavyweight Travis Browne exploded into a superman punch at UFC 130, blasting six-foot-eleven behemoth Stefan Struve into oblivion.
Not only did this take Browne’s unbeaten streak to 12 straight fights, it also secured him the ‘Knockout of the Night’ bonus and ensured the Hawaiian truly made his mark on MMA’s biggest stage.
“During the fight there were moments where Struve would try to come in and he was leaving his hands down,” Browne revealed.
“When we’d separate and I would initiate he’d do a good job of backing up and being defensive, but in the first couple of minutes I started to learn his body language and I noticed that whenever he tried to be offensive he’d leave the opening.
“I’d been thinking about throwing it maybe 30 seconds before that so once I saw him start to come forward, that’s when I decided to explode.”
Browne admits even he was shocked when he saw Struve’s gargantuan frame topple to the floor.
“We actually don’t train the superman punch to knock you out, we train it to set up a combination,” he says.
“So I planned a combination to come after that but obviously the punch landed and knocked him out. I was just like, ‘Wow, okay, I’ll take that!’”
Alliance Training Center star Browne is part of a new breed of heavyweights who not only hold explosive power but also possess speed in their hands and agility in their footwork.
“My athleticism and ability to close the range is something that has helped me. The superman punch is something I’ll definitely keep using for sure,” he promises.
Fans may flock to watch the lighter weights for guaranteed barn-burners, but with Travis Browne leading the way in the heavyweight division, it’s time to witness light-speed Goliaths turning the lights out in one match after another. Order your tickets now.
