The Nevada State Athletic Commission has dropped the hammer on UFC featherweight champion, Conor McGregor, which includes a massive fine, community service and more.
The NSAC yesterday held a hearing to discuss, address and vote on a number of issues related to the world of combat sport and on the itinerary was Conor McGregor for his role in the bottle throwing incident with Nate Diaz at the UFC 202 fight week press conference in the David Copperfield Theatre inside the MGM Grand.
The Nevada attorney general’s office initially recommended a $25,000 and 25 hours of community service. But after some discussion the NSAC unanimously voted to fine McGregor 5% of his $3 million disclosed purse for the fight, which amounts to $150,000, perform 50 hours of community service and also use him in a public service announcement against bullying.
McGregor was available to comment and answer for his actions via the telephone.
“I just want to apologize for the incident,” McGregor said. “It was a very unusual incident as I saw it unfolding even. I just acted wrong, and all I can say is I’m sorry and I will learn from this. This fight had everything on the line for me. This was the highest stakes fight I’d ever been in. I was in a different mindset.
“So all I can do is learn from it and learn to handle myself better if I find myself in a situation like that. I just want to own up and apologize for my part and say that it will not happen in the future. That’s really all I can say.”
Nate Diaz was also scheduled to appear in this hearing but will have is due process at a later date.
Following the conclusion of the hearing McGregor took to social media and, in typical fashion, hit the MMA community with the following zinger. “I get fined more than these bums get paid,” he posted.
