With Stipe Miocic successfully defending his UFC heavyweight championship against Alistair Overeem this past weekend at UFC 203 inevitably the question raised was who would be next? With Fabricio Werdum victorious against Travis Browne (via decision) in the co-main event he staked his claim, however the general consensus amongst the MMA community was to award the next title shot to Cain Velasquez who put away Browne in much more impressive fashion with a first round TKO at UF 200 this past July.
Well it appears both title challengers may be on course for a rematch. With Miocic perhaps taking some time off, Velasquez made an appearance on UFC Tonight yesterday and took the role of match maker asking for the Werdum rematch.
“If Stipe doesn’t want to take a break, I want him next,” said Velasquez. “If he does want to take a break – I heard he might (not) want to fight again (until) 2017 – if that’s the case, the only fight that I would want, and the only fight that makes sense right now, is to fight Werdum in December. I’d want to fight Werdum in December.”
Werdum beat Velasquez via a third round guillotine choke submission last summer at UFC 188 to become the UFC heavyweight champion so with an opportunity to settle the score, revenge is on the mind for the former two time champ.
“This one (with Werdum) is personal,” said Velasquez. “I could just sit around and wait, (but) if Werdum wants to fight in December, let’s make it happen.”
