The most in-demand coach in MMA demonstrates the best techniques for the cage, with help from UFC bantamweight John Dodson.
1 - John has Greg’s hips locked down so he can’t throw strikes with power or work for submissions with his legs.
2 - Greg puts a hand on each of John’s shoulders and opens his legs so he has room to maneuver.
3 - By pushing against John’s shoulders, Greg can get the leverage to start scooting out slightly to one side.
4 - Greg continues to shuffle from side to side until he’s out from underneath John.
5 - Now he’s at a distance to do damage, Greg raises an elbow and elevates his hips.
6 - Greg sits forward, which creates enough force to make the elbow land with power.
TOP TIPS
AMATEUR
Think of the elbow movement as like a sit-up. Try not to use just your arm to throw the strike.
SEMI-PRO
Try to scoot out so you opponent’s shoulders are at arm’s length. If they try to drive forward to maintain control, you can hold them off .
PROFESSIONAL
Be careful not to foul your opponent by elbowing the back of their head.
