Like all other East Coast MMA fighters, former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar was delighted by this week’s news that the New York Assembly have passed a bill to legalize MMA in the State.

The passing of the bill means the UFC are now painfully close to holding the sport’s first major event at the world-famous Madison Square Garden arena.

“I definitely want to fight at Madison Square Garden,” Edgar told FO back in 2011. “I feel like I’m being deprived of that, actually. I’ve been going into the city my whole life. I train next door to Madison Square Garden at Renzo Gracie’s academy and over in Tribeca at Phil Nurse’s.”

As the current top contender in the UFC’s featherweight division, a championship bout between Edgar and the weight class’s current champ, Conor McGregor, would make the perfect main event for a momentous MSG event.

“Someone told me that the arena was built for combat sports,” Edgar said. “They call it the world’s most famous arena for a reason. You had (Muhammad) Ali-(Joe) Frazier there. I want to be able to fight there, for sure. I want to be on that marquee out there.”

After campaigning for a title fight against McGregor for so long now and having been denied at every turn, we could finally see Edgar’s fury turn to fulfillment if the UFC can secure their MSG show before the end of the year.
