Jiu-jitsu and MMA brand Scramble takes its icons and its history seriously.
Recently they arranged a sitdown with the legendary Kazushi Sakuraba in his native Tokyo, Japan. The former PRIDE FC star champion is one of the best pound-for-pound fighter there has ever been in mixed martial arts.
Sakuraba regularly gave up more than 20 pounds weight advantage to his opponents, but he is best known for his run against the Gracie family at the height of the ‘Gracie Jiu Jitsu’ craze. He holds four wins over Gracie members – Royler, Royce, Renzo and Ryan.
He’s not officially retired but his fans hope he isn’t planning to continue fighting, because Sakuraba’s years of fighting anyone and everyone have done some serious damage to his body. But those same years have made him a repository of knowledge and experience, which is why his views on such things as training methodology are so interesting.
