Grab a D’arce choke from half guard when your opponent starts to threaten from the bottom.
Vinny Magalhaes: The four-time world BJJ champion, 205lb fighter and instructor reveals his best no-gi techniques, with Casey Milliken.
1 - Vinny is in Casey’s half guard, but he’s threatening to a sweep, escape or to take the back with an underhook.
2 - By taking a whizzer on Casey’s underhook and turning onto his right shoulder, Vinny works his hand under his arm and his neck.
3 - Vinny drives his shoulder into Casey’s armpit while he pulls Casey’s head into his stomach to get his arm as far through as possible.
4 - When his arm is all the way through, he pulls it up against Casey’s neck and slides his left elbow down to push Casey’s head into him.
5 - Vinny grabs his bicep and climbs his other hand up Casey’s back to get a tight hold, then pinches his elbows together.
6 - By flattening Casey – using his chest and sprawling – Vinny takes the most dominant position possible to finish the choke.
TOP TIPS:
WHITE BELT
- You don’t have to pass your opponent’s guard to finish. You can just stay in half guard
PURPLE BELT
- If you can’t use your opponent’s underhook against them quickly, find some way to neutralize it as it’s a good position for them to start working for
BLACK BELT
- Even if he pops his head up, it doesn’t take much to lock your hands and drive his head in
