Conor McGregor is no longer the most notorious name in MMA. That accolade now belongs to John Gotti III, who won his professional debut in October by first-round KO and is the grandson of New York mafia boss John Gotti,
The fighter’s grandfather, known as ‘The Teflon Don’, headed up the powerful Gambino crime family and then, in 1992, received a life sentence for his various crimes. He died in 2002 having contracted throat cancer.
Gotti III, meanwhile, decided to take up MMA in 2013, having had his interest in the sport piqued by his father and is determined for the media to focus on his fighting instead of his family. He went 5-1 as an amateur before his pro success at CES MMA 46.
“I just have to focus on what I can control and what I can create for myself,” he said. “The past is the past and you can’t change that. I’m trying to create a positive image and my own legacy.”
Doing it for seemingly all the right reasons, Gotti III currently trains at Long Island MMA alongside UFC welterweight Ryan LaFlare, who believes the New Yorker with the famous surname has the ability to 100% succeed at the Bellator or UFC level.
