Renzo Gracie is viewed as one of the greatest BJJ artists ever, and an inspiration to many. He does us the honor of passing on his skills and wisdom.
Skill: Scarf-hold escape to Kimura
1. Ali has Renzo trapped in a scarf hold, controlling him by gripping his hands together around Renzo’s head.
2. Renzo starts his escape by reaching his left arm around the front of Ali’s head, while also forcing his right hand inside of Ali’s scarf-hold grip.
3. Renzo grips his left wrist with his right hand, making a frame which through his left forearm creates pressure on Ali’s neck.
4. Renzo scoots his hips out and away from Ali’s hips.
5. Renzo lifts both legs up in the air. By using the frame he has created with his arms, Renzo pushes Ali’s head away to create space so he can bring his left leg in front of Ali’s head.
6. Renzo uses his left leg to push Ali’s head down to the mat. The frame he created with his arms simultaneously breaks Ali’s grip.
7. Renzo brings his right forearm down to the mat in preparation to do his ‘stand-up technique.’ He keeps his head tight to Ali’s right arm to stop it from moving.
8. Renzo keeps Ali’s right arm trapped with his left arm and his head. Keeping contact with the floor with his left foot and right forearm, Renzo brings his right leg back off the floor, turning to his knees.
9. Now on his knees, Renzo brings his right arm through and behind Ali’s right arm. He grips Ali’s right wrist with his left hand and his own wrist with his right hand, making a ‘kimura’ grip.
10. Renzo steps his right leg up and rips Ali’s right hand out away from Ali’s side, creating a right angle in Ali’s arm.
11. Renzo turns Ali’s arm to the right, creating pressure on Ali’s shoulder to force the tap.
