Your opponent thinks they’re safe – until their legs are in the air and they’re tapping to a calf slicer

Ricky Lundell, the BJJ black belt and NCAA Division I wrestling prodigy presents his MMA leglock masterclass with UFC heavyweight Frank Mir.

1 - Frank is in turtle position, so Ricky grabs an underhook and takes hold of the shoulder to set up his next move.

2 - Ricky steps around Frank and puts a double hook on his right leg, wrapping his leg around his thigh and under his calf.

3 - With his right hand, Ricky goes under Frank’s left thigh and grabs his foot. Ricky reinforces his grip by using both hands.

4 - Keeping hold of the foot with both hands, Ricky falls to his back, rolling Frank on top of him.

5- By putting his left leg over the top of his right shin, Ricky creates a triangle and locks Frank’s leg down.

6 - Ricky brings his other hand around Frank’s leg to grab his foot with both hands, then pulls down on his foot to get the tap.

TOP TIPS

WHITE BELT

Grab the foot by the toes, rather than at the top of the instep closer to the shin.

PURPLE BELT

Be careful not to leave your right arm out, because your opponent could grab it for an armbar.

BLACK BELT

Instead of making a triangle, you can use your left foot to push against your other ankle, driving it deeper into your opponent’s knee pit for a more painful slicer and get the tap more quickly.
