Issue 148
December 2016
Greg Jackson, the world’s most in-demand coach demonstrates the best techniques for the cage, with help from women’s MMA pioneer, Julie Kedzie. Such as how to go back to basics and run the pipe to get your opponent down to the ground.
1: Greg fires a jab at Julie to get her to defend so he can set up his attack.
2: Changing levels, Greg shoots in for a single-leg takedown with his head on the outside.
3: Keeping his back straight, Greg drives his shoulder into Julie’s hip and grabs the back of her calf.
4: Greg elevates Julie’s leg and pinches his knees together to control her position.
5: Greg takes a step back with his right foot and drives Julie’s leg downwards with his shoulder.
6: This puts Julie off-balance and onto the mat, where Greg can look to strike or pass her guard.
TOP TIPS
AMATEUR
As well as the single-leg, you can use your jab as a disguise to set up other attacks.
SEMI-PRO
Make sure you have a tight lock on your opponent’s calf with your arms and legs so they can’t pull it out and escape.
PROFESSIONAL
When you go for a takedown, commit to having your head on the inside or outside.
Changing during the transition can give your opponent time to adjust and stop you.
