Dana White always says immediately after a UFC card when he's being asked about what's next for the athletes that he doesn't make fights on the same night.

That process usually takes place at his matchmaker meeting at the start of the week but in the case of UFC 308, the conversation did not wait that long.

In the main event in Abu Dhabi, Ilia Topuria stopped Max Holloway to defend the featherweight title and was joined in the Octagon by Alexander Volkanovski.

After losing his belt to "El Matador" in February, Volkanovski chose to sit out for a while but now "The Great" is back and ready for his rematch which Topuria was happy to grant him.

White also gave this fight the green light during his post-fight press conference.

"Listen, Volkanovski is one of those guys, we're not going to say no to Volkanovski. He's been that guy for us anytime we needed him. He was on this run like Adesanya and like Alex is on right now, when things don't go our way and you got to call a guy, Volkanovski's always been that guy. He really was and for him to ask, I don't think anybody in this room is going, 'Oh this is ridiculous or crazy,' and who wouldn't want to see it again?"

The co-main event saw another huge performance as Khamzat Chimaev remained undefeated by submitting Robert Whittaker in the first round.

With a big statement win like that, he could leapfrog Sean Strickland who was looking like the next challenger for middleweight champion, Dricus Du Plessis.

When White was asked what he said to Chimaev after the fight, this is what he revealed.

"I just said congratulations, great fight and we'll talk to you soon."

The UFC boss was later asked whether he thinks "Borz" will be ahead of Strickland, this is the response he gave.

"It's a good question, call me on Tuesday."

Another fighter that may have earned a title shot with his latest win at UFC 308 was Magomed Ankalaev who stuck to his promise of striking with Aleksandar Rakić for all three rounds.

White was impressed with what he saw even if it took the light heavyweight contender some time to really assert himself in the fight.

"He looked good, he absolutely looked great."

Ankalaev is the holder of the second longest unbeaten streak in the history of the division behind Jon Jones so when White was questioned whether he will finally get an opportunity to face Alex Pereira for the title, he gave the sign that it is likely next.

"I would have to say yes."
