Snare your opponent with a variation of the clock choke
Vinny Magalhaes
Four-time world BJJ champion, 205lb fighter and instructor at Syndicate MMA in Las Vegas reveals his best fight tips with Scott Kaplan
1 - Vinny can start to attack from this choke from side control when Scott is in the turtle position.
2 - Vinny grabs Scott’s lapel with his right hand and pushes it up to create some space for his attack.
3 - Vinny feeds his right hand deep into Scott’s collar, then pulls down on the lapel with his left hand.
4 - After grabbing Scott’s wrist with his right hand, Vinny begins to walk his legs towards Scott’s head.
5 - To apply more pressure on Scott to set up the finish, Vinny sits through with his right leg.
6 - Vinny brings his right hand past Scott’s shoulder and onto the mat, drops his hip to the mat and pulls the lapel back to submit.
TOP TIPS
WHITE BELT
When your opponent is in turtle guard, block their far hip with your arm to stop them rolling back to guard.
PURPLE BELT
Lean your weight forward when applying the choke.
BLACK BELT
Pushing the lapel up gives you more space to feed your hand in for the choke.
VINNY SAYS
“Fredson Paixao showed me this move. When I grab the lapel I don’t pull it down because there’s no room for my thumb to go inside. I push it up to make more room. Once I have my thumb in I pull down. If I stay still, Scott is able to pull guard. That’s why I swing my arm over his shoulder and pull the lapel back to choke him.”
