Make your opponent tap out quick with a sneaky heel hook from half guard

Greg Jackson

The world’s most in-demand coach demonstrates the best techniques for the cage, with help from women’s MMA pioneer, Julie Kedzie

1 - Julie is stuck with her back on the mat with Greg in her half guard.

2 - Greg places his left instep on the inside of Julie’s thigh.

3 - Greg brings his forearm under Julie’s chin and raises his head.

4 - After falling to his side, Greg brings his right leg over Julie’s legs.

5 - To keep Julie’s leg in place, Greg pinches his knees together and locks her toes into the pit of his elbow.

6 - Greg hooks Julie’s heel with his inner elbow, takes a Gable grip, arches his back and rotates to his left to apply the submission.

TOP TIPS

AMATEUR

Throwing short punches at your opponent from half guard can create openings for transitions.

SEMI-PRO

You must free your knee from your opponent’s legs to escape.

PROFESSIONAL

You shouldn’t have to turn your chest to finish the submission. Driving your opponent’s toes towards their butt is a more efficient method.
