It’s five years since Cheick Kongo and Pat Barry stole the show on a wild night in Pittsburgh.
The UFC’s fourth show on the Versus channel was a marvelously manic affair even before it began. Rick Story replaced Anthony Johnson to fight Nate Marquardt in the evening’s headliner, who was then replaced by hometown hero Charlie Brenneman, who had originally come in as a replacement for Matt Riddle against TJ Grant, who also pulled out with injury. Phew! As a result of all of those main-event musical chairs, Cheick Kongo vs. Pat Barry was promoted to the summit of the card, and boy, was it a fight worthy of its newfound top-of-the-bill status. Kongo was as close to unconscious as anyone could possibly get after ‘HD’ dropped him twice, but just as he went in for the kill, the Frenchman hit him with a perfect pair of counter-right hands to pull off the most dramatic come-from-behind victory we’ve ever seen. His World MMA Awards ‘Comeback of the Year’ prize that year was well earned.
