Issue 140

April 2016

Put your opponent on their butt with one swift move. You have a problem with that? No mercy! US Olympic coach and 6th degree black belt Jimmy Pedro Jr, along with Aaron Kunuhiro, shows you judo techniques that work for MMA.

1. Jimmy and Aaron both have a hold on each other’s lapel and sleeve. The only difference is Jimmy has an over-grip with his hand on Aaron’s lapel.

2. Jimmy steps his left foot behind Aaron’s right foot and pushes into him by closing the distance with his chest.

3. Aaron recognizes the threat and reacts by stepping backward to avoid being thrown. Jimmy steps forward and loads his weight onto his back leg.

4. Jimmy takes advantage of Aaron’s backward momentum by sweeping his foot with his lead leg as soon as he starts to step back and transfer his weight.

5. By planting his right foot, Jimmy can generate a lot of power with the sweep and Aaron gets taken off his feet.

TOP TIPS

White belt: When drilling takedowns and trips, make sure you break your fall by slapping the mat with your forearm. You could break your arm if you post out with your hand.

Brown belt: Pull down hard on the lapel and sleeve for extra leverage when attempting the trip.

Black belt: Standing foot sweeps can be utilized in MMA. Sweep your opponent’s leg from either the Muay Thai or over/under clinch after shifting their weight onto their back foot.
