Urijah Faber claims WEC gold and begins his tenure as torch-bearer for the lighter weight classes.
With a chiseled jaw, surfer-guy looks and an impressive 11-1 record, Urijah Faber was well on his way to becoming a star attraction in mixed martial arts. But 10 years ago this month, he captured the title that would be his launch pad to creating a lasting legacy. By defeating Cole Escovedo at WEC 19 ‘The California Kid’ claimed the promotion’s 145lb title. Zuffa took control of the organization just a few months later and it became the premier destination for athletes south of lightweight. A dominant and exciting title reign elevated Faber to the role of poster boy, which was the platform he needed to carve out one of the sport’s most successful careers.
