Greg Jackson, the most in-demand coach in MMA, demonstrates the best techniques for the cage, with help from UFC flyweight John Dodson. Here, Greg shows how to catch a kick, force a trip and unleash some devastating offense on your ailing opponent.
1. John throws a right body kick at Greg.
2. Greg steps out and catches John’s kick under his left arm.
3. Greg throws a right cross and lands on John’s head while he keeps hold of his right leg.
4. Greg pushes John’s shoulder with his right hand and steps forward with his right foot.
5. Greg places his right leg behind John’s left calf and continues to push John’s shoulder to trip him.
6. Greg stands outside John’s guard and begins to throw down punches from a standing position.
TOP TIPS
Amateur: Mix up your ground ‘n’ pound with head and body strikes to keep your opponent guessing.
Semi pro: Stepping away from a kick while you catch the leg will take away some of the impact
Professional: Avoid up-kicks when standing above the guard by controlling your opponent’s feet. It’s a safer bet than grabbing their shins.
Greg says: “After catching the leg, it’s key to punch first so your opponent is worried about strikes and not thinking about the takedown so much.”
