March 2016

Nutrition guru Mike Dolce answers readers' questions on superfoods, flavouring fresh water and receiving difficult advice.

Q. After more than a decade in MMA, what’s the most difficult piece of advice you’ve had to come to terms with?

A. Randy Couture hired me as the head strength coach of Tem Quest in 2004. During that time I had the opportunity to work with many of the sport’s greatest athletes. Also, many of the potentially greatest athletes that never made it to the top for various reasons.

I tried so hard to help them overcome the challenges in their way, which were usually self-imposed. In talking about one such athlete on the team, Randy told me: “Mike, no matter how much you want to see them do well, you can never want it more than they do. It will ruin your passion for the sport.” That was eye-opening.

Q. What superfoods are you tipping for 2016?

A. This year is all about wild-caught meats. Science has show the massive difference in wild-caught game as compared to conventionally-raised varieties. Lower levels of saturated fat, higher levels of healthy fats, increased micro-nutrients and so much more flavor.

Q. Any tips to add flavor to my daily fresh water intake?

A. We have a few great recipes. First, we’ll make lots of green tea, boil it in a large pot, add raw honey, let it cool, pour it in a glass pitcher and you have an all-natural, fat burning, immune-enhancing iced tea! We’ll also add sliced fresh fruit to a pitcher of water. Strawberries, oranges, lemon or even cucumber work extremely well and as a bonus, you’re kids will love it too!
