A basic attack you can use from top position when your go-to submission is just out of reach

Vinny Magalhaes with Casey Milliken

Four-time world BJJ champion, light heavyweight fighter and Syndicate MMA instructor

1 - Vinny begins on top of Casey, who defends his position by tying up a leg and grabbing double underhooks from half guard.

2 - Vinny looks for a D’arce choke. Due to Casey’s high underhook Vinny can’t thread his arm deep under the neck to grab his left bicep and lock in the submission.

3 - Knowing the D’arce is out of bounds, Vinny switches to a guillotine by lining up his right wrist with the side of Casey’s neck.

4 - Vinny reaches round Casey’s head, slides his left forearm past his neck and grabs the back of his own right hand.

5 - To prevent being swept from his strong position, Vinny sprawls his hips to the mat.

6 - Keeping his grip, Vinny pulls his elbows in to apply pressure and finish a one-arm-in guillotine.

VINNY SAYS

This move actually works when you’re trying to set up a D’arce choke and your arms are too short or the guy has wide shoulders and you can’t go through and lock your hand on your bicep.

Most of the time when your opponent has the underhook, I’m going to try and go for the D’arce choke. It’s much deeper, it’s a much stronger move and I’m going to be able to get the finish right away if I can lock it in.
