Cormier gets the call to step into the UFC 187 main event against Anthony Johnson after Jon Jones is stripped of his 205lb title due to an alleged hit-and-run incident. “Lets do this! Respect to AJ, but it’s time to scrap,” DC posts on Instagram.
WEDNESDAY 29TH
With less than a month before he faces Johnson for the vacant UFC light heavyweight strap, Cormier is straight into full training camp mode with some cardio on the Airdyne bike before a private jiu-jitsu session with Leandro Vieira.

After several days of hard training, DC takes his mind off his own fight by sitting down to enjoy boxing’s ‘Fight of the Century’: Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao. “Been waiting for this. I can’t wait,” he posts online. Mayweather wins via unanimous decision after 12 rounds.
Sunday 10TH
With just two weeks to go before DC meets ‘Rumble’, training camp is going very well for the former Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix champ. He’s feeling the full benefits of sparring with Cain Velasquez, after the UFC heavyweight numero uno was injured during his last fight. “After training today I am more confident than ever,” he boasts.
Tuesday 12TH
Considering the relatively short notice for this title fight, the former heavyweight’s cut to 205lb is going very well. On the fighter’s menu today is a balanced plate of chicken and broccoli.
Saturday 16TH
With just one week to go before one of the biggest fights of his professional career, DC is sharpening his striking in preparation for his battle with KO machine Johnson by hitting pads with AKA head coach Javier Mendez. “I’m looking forward to competing next week,” he says.
Sunday 17TH
Cormier leaves his home in San Jose, California, for the bright lights of Las Vegas, Nevada, where his fight will take place at the MGM Grand on May 23rd. “Another fight – ready to go,” he says.

As the big night draws closer, Cormier sits down with his coaches to re-watch his losing performance against Jones at UFC 182 to ensure he fixes the holes in his game.
Saturday 23RD
Fight night is finally here. When the main event begins, it’s Johnson who starts strong and lands a big shot that drops Cormier. However, showing the heart of a champion, he rallies and turns the tables. After putting an exhausting pace on his opponent for two-and-a-half rounds, Cormier pulls off the submission win at 2:39 of round three to become the new UFC light heavyweight champion.
