Get off your back and onto the attack with this windscreen wiper escape from the guard position

Greg Jackson

The most in-demand coach in MMA demonstrates the best techniques for the cage, with help from UFC flyweight John Dodson

1 - John is on top of Greg in his guard. Greg starts to throw elbows to the top of John’s head to force a reaction.

2 - To stop this painful attack, John blocks Greg’s right tricep with his left hand.

3 - Greg seizes this opportunity by grabbing John’s left wrist with his left hand. He also opens his guard so he can advance his position.

4 - Keeping his grip, Greg puts his right foot on John’s hip so he has a point of contact to push off.

5 - Greg now uses both hands to control John’s arm, then he raises his hips off the mat, elevating John and giving him space to move.

6 - Greg moves John’s arm across his body and pushes his hip with his foot to create space. Now on his side, Greg frees his left leg.

7 - Greg continues to turn and finishes the escape on his knees. He’s now on top of John and can try to take his back to work for a submission or attack by throwing strikes. He can also get to his feet.

TOP TIPS

AMATEUR

Prevent your opponent from passing your guard by keeping your legs crossed. However, you will need to open your guard to attack.

SEMI-PRO

You should only incorporate elbow strikes into your sparring if you use protective elbow pads.

PROFESSIONAL

You can transition into this escape from an armbar attempt. If your opponent defends your submission attempt, keep hold of their arm and use the same technique, starting at step 4.
