Jump into guard to drag your opponent down to the mat and submit them

Vinny Magalhaes

Four-time world BJJ champion, 205lb fighter and instructor at Syndicate MMA in Las Vegas shows you submissions with Scott Kaplan

1 - Vinny grabs Scott’s lapel with his left hand and the top of Scott’s left elbow with his right hand.

2 - Keeping his grips, Vinny jumps and wraps his legs around Scott’s body to take the guard position.

3 - Keeping his guard closed, Vinny drops his shoulders to the mat and hooks Scott’s left ankle with his left hand.

4 - Vinny uncrosses his feet to open his guard, giving his hips more room to maneuver.

5 - Vinny swings his right leg over Scott’s head, then drives his feet to the mat and as he pulls Scott’s leg towards his body.

6 - When both fighters are on the mat, Vinny keeps a hold on Scott’s leg to prevent him from escaping.

7 - To finish the submission, Vinny falls to his back and raises his hips to hyperextend Scott’s arm and make him tap.

TOP TIPS

WHITE BELT

Practice jumping guard with a partner close to your size. The standing grappler should keep their back straight and knees bent when they brace themselves to take their partner’s weight.

PURPLE BELT

You can be disqualified in some grappling tournaments for jumping guard recklessly. Always get a solid grip and stay in control of your body so you stay within the rules and don’t injure someone by falling onto their knee.

BLACK BELT

If you swing your legs around as you pull guard, you can land directly into the position shown in step 5 to pull off a flying armbar.
