Issue 130
July 2015
Greg Jackson is the most sought-after trainer in MMA. Each issue he shows you how to mix up your martial arts skills with UFC flyweight John ‘The Magician’ Dodson. Here, Greg demonstrates the cross-leg get-up,
1. Greg (red T-shirt) begins on his back with his legs close to John, who’s standing over him at close range in an orthodox stance.
2. Greg slides his hips out on the mat and uses the top of his left foot to hook the back of John’s left knee.
3. Greg’s hooked foot gives him leverage to turn upwards in a corkscrew movement and get to one knee.
4. When Greg turns upwards he gets to one knee and hooks the back of John’s left knee with his right arm and faces the same direction as his opponent.
5. Then Greg adjusts his arms to hook John’s left thigh with his right arm and John’s left ankle with his left hand.
6. To finish the move, Greg uses the power in his legs like he’s rising from a squat to pick John’s leg up and then take control of his waist with a good head position up against his body.
PRO TIP
As he rises, Greg is already turning so he can stop John if he tries to sprawl.
