Flyweight king Demetrious Johnson flashes a passion for country, rap and a good thriller.
STYLE
How would you describe your personal style?
“I would say my style is very basic. Not too flashy. If I find something I like I will wear it all the time. That’s all I wear. I like wearing boots. I don’t like wearing tennis shoes. I wear jeans. If I have something I have it in every color because I like it and I can keep wearing it.”
What brand of jeans do you usually go for?
“Hudson Jeans fit my legs and my body type. I have a dance that I have to do to get into my jeans. It’s like an Irish jig type of dance. If I spend $100 on a pair of jeans I want to make sure I can breathe. I need to be able to move in my jeans. I need to be in clothes that I can fight in if I need to put in work. My style is ready for action.”
You don’t wear any watches or accessories either?
“I hate jewelry. I hate accessories and all that stuff. I’m trying to get into watches. I can’t rock a Fossil, though. I like Breitling watches but I don’t need to spend five grand to tell the time.”
What genre of music do you gravitate towards most?
“I listen to all types of music. I will listen to country when my wife is listening to it. I like Carrie Underwood. Other than that I listen to rap. I listen to some rock ‘n’ roll, too. There is no particular song in rock ‘n’ roll that I like, but there are plenty of songs I don’t.”
OK, what rock ‘n’ roll track do you hate?
“Plenty... Like, my one buddy turns on Weezer (starts singing Say it Ain’t So) I’m like, ‘Turn it off!’ He tells me that’s rock ‘n’ roll. But I tell him, ‘That’s f**king garbage.’ So, yeah, it depends on the song.”
Any particular rap song?
“It all depends on the track and the beat and, of course, my mood. That song, ‘I’m in love with the CoCo’ (CoCo by OT Genasis), when I first heard it I thought it was stupid, but since that whole thing with Jon Jones happened and everybody started playing it, it’s grown on me. It’s kind of catchy. I like it... The song, not the CoCo!”
Any rap artists in particular?
“I like Lil Wayne, Young Money, 2 Chainz, I like new stuff and some old school stuff. I still like 2Pac a lot. And I like Kanye West. I liked him before, but I like him a lot more after I saw him in concert.”
Has your taste in music changed over the years?
“I’ve shifted towards more rock ‘n’ roll music. If it’s legit and I like how the guy is singing and there’s a guy screaming in the background backing him up, these guys are f**king
rocking out!”
If you could walk out to one song for the rest of your career what would it be and why?
“If I could chop it up the way I wanted to I would pick Dance Gavin Dance track The Jiggler. I would come out to that every single time.”
TV
Are there certain shows or a series that you can’t miss right now?
“We always watch Battle of the Exes or Real World Challenges. And The Walking Dead. My wife likes Sister Wives and she’s also into that House Hunters stuff. I actually like Love it or List it. We watch all kinds of shows. Every Monday I get home and I’m like, ‘Babe, Teen Wolf is on!’ We put Tyren to bed. I sit there with my chicken and asparagus and I’m like, ‘Get ‘em!’”
If you could be on any TV show what would you want to star in?
“The Walking Dead. I would be a survivor. I would be like, ‘Rick, it’s not the right thing to do. You know better than that.’ He would be like, ‘I know DJ but we got to make it!’”
Are you a TiVo guy or do you subscribe?
“I’ve got Netflix. I watched from season one all the way through season 15 of The Office. I would just sit there and watch it for hours. I liked Pam and I loved Dwight Schrute and Schrute Farms, of course.”
What shows did you enjoy growing up?
“The Simpsons. Every Sunday me and my brother would just down and watch The Simpsons. We would eat it up. Every Sunday at 8am on Channel 13 Fox. We never missed it.”
CARS
What was your first car and how much did you pay for it?
“The first car I had was a 1990 Mitsubishi Mirage. I paid $500 for it. It was a four-door, and that’s about it.”
What car are you driving now?
“Right now I drive a 2011 BMW 328i. I got it used so don’t get your hopes up.”
If you could have any car on the planet what would be your dream car?
“If I could have any car I would get an Audi R8. They’re incredible.”
MOVIES
What type of movies do you enjoy watching most of all?
“I like horror movies. I like the horror/suspense/thriller type of movie. It’s different. For a while every night I would watch A Nightmare on Elm Street. I loved it. Every night I would watch it. Freddy Krueger is going to get those f**king kids every time! I wasn’t a big fan of Friday The 13th and Jason. Halloween and Michael Myers was alright, but Freddy Krueger was my favorite. I also like a lot of superhero movies as well.”
Who would play Demetrious Johnson in a movie made about your life?
“I would play myself. I don’t need a script. It would be Demetrious Johnson cast as or played by Demetrious Johnson.”
What was the last movie you watched and what did you think of it?
“The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies. It was OK. There was just way too much action. That sounds crazy to say, but the Lord of the Rings generally had a lot more dialogue in them. There were just so many battles and so the whole movie looked like a complete CGI edit.”
