Issue 127

April 2015

Kenny Johnson is one of the most esteemed wrestling coaches in MMA. Noted for his work with BJ Penn, he’s also taught Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida. He and UFC bantamweight Pedro Munhoz present the best wrestling techniques for MMA

1. Southpaw Kenny throws a right jab towards Pedro’s face, but Pedro ducks underneath and shoots for a single leg.

2. Kenny leans forward – forcing his weight onto Pedro’s neck – and slides his right hand underneath Pedro’s left armpit. Kenny then drops down onto his knees, before grabbing his left wrist with his right hand. He places his left hand on the back of Pedro’s neck, dropping his body weight on top and stopping him from popping back up.

3. With complete control over Pedro’s upper body, Kenny spins him onto his back and rotates his body into side control. He then slides his arm underneath Pedro’s neck and holds him on the ground using a gable grip to keep him in position.
