Fight camp fuel from inside the ice-boxes of champions. The UFC welterweight contender reveals a sodium-rich diet.
Q. Name the leading five must-haves in your ice-box?
A. “Greek yogurt, vanilla almond milk, peanut butter and jelly and some type of cereal. If I have those things I’m all set.”
Q. What do you gorge on?
A. “I know I’d better leave these damn Sour Patch Kids alone! Maybe ice cream and cookies too. I’m a sucker for a good cookie.”
Q. What do you cheat with?
A. “I have a friend that owns a Vietnamese restaurant. It’s the best you can get in the Midwest. Some days I just go eat! Sometimes it might be something fried or sauced all up. I like a lot of Asian dishes.”
Q. Do you keep anything other than frozen peas in your freezer?
A. “With my three boys I always have something quick in there like Pizza Rolls, breakfast sandwiches, ice cream. We don’t act like we are on the vegan 100-calorie-a-day diet. We like to eat!”
Q. What’s your favorite bottled sauce?
A. “Worcestershire sauce. I also like barbecue and Sriracha. These fools got me on Sriracha!”
Q. What dessert do you enjoy?
A. “Cheesecake. Man, you’re going to make me sound fat in this interview!”
Q. What’s your own signature dish?
“I’m good at making anything on the grill. Breakfast food, too.”
Q. What’s your favorite meal during fight camp?
A. “A Vietnamese dish, like lemon peppered steak. It’s real tender and diced up.”
Q. What meal do you eat after the weigh-in?
A. “I like to have some type of pasta. Maybe with a chicken breast and a protein shake too. My stomach can expand really fast so I weigh in at 170lb and within three hours I can be back up to 185.”
Q. What food do you look forward to most after a fight?
A. “It usually has to be a 24-hour place. Maybe some breakfast food, waffles, pancakes or something. I just like to enjoy the time with friends and family.”
Q. Which nationality of food is your favorite?
A. “Over the last two years it’s changed to Vietnamese. There are so many options and so much variety.”
Q. Anything in there inedible?
A. “To me… Kale. You would never get me to eat a beetroot either.”
