Issue 119

September 2014

Kenny Johnson is one of the most esteemed wrestling coaches in MMA. Noted for his work with BJ Penn, he’s also taught Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida. He and UFC bantamweight Pedro Munhoz present the best wrestling techniques for MMA

1 Kenny is looking to shoot a double-leg on Pedro by lowering his level under a punch.

2 Pedro commits to the jab and Kenny changes levels under the punch.

3 Kenny penetrates deep to the double-leg.

Note: Kenny’s head is up and tight to Pedro’s ribs with his back straight.

4 Pedro starts sprawling and Kenny feels he is losing the position. Kenny starts to take his right hand to chop Pedro’s left knee.

5 Kenny simultaneously chops Pedro’s left knee to the mat, lifts Pedro’s right knee up, lifts his head up and across Pedro’s back circling Pedro to the mat.

6 Kenny continues to drive Pedro to the mat, using his head pressure and drive, in a circular motion.

7 Kenny continues the drive until he secures the side control position.
