THE ESSENTIAL GEAR USED BY TODAY’S ATHLETES

ATT’s UFC flyweight explains why adding motocross kneepads to his gym bag has helped protect his body

CLETO REYES HEAD GUARD

“I know some people don’t wear headgear because it obstructs their view but the Cleto Reyes head guard I own is a really good, professional head guard that fits very well and is comfortable. I like to spar hard, but I also want to be protected.”

16OZ FORCA LUTA GLOVES

“Forca Luta a fairly new fight brand from the UK and I really like them. They’re really stylish gloves and look good, but they also fit really well on my hands. They’re definitely a good fit, which is important because you want

to be comfortable when you’re training. I’m very happy with them, that’s for sure.”

VENUM shin guards

“I wear shin guards, but I prefer MMA shin guards over Thai ones because they’re a little bit thinner as I’m not much of a kicker myself, to be honest. The shin guards just work better for me and the game I have.”

FUNKY GUMS MOUTH GUARD

“Funky Gums always has fantastic mouth guards. They sent me a personalized one so I’ve got one to wear for my fights and training and it’s wicked. They always look cool and I’m happy to wear them.”

GFORM KNEE PADS

“When you’re my age and you’re getting old and brittle, impact on hard surfaces, like when I’m shooting in for a double-leg takedown and things like that, can ruin your bones. That’s why I wear these pads which are actually for motocross sports, but they work incredibly well for people who are training MMA. It really protects your knees and elbows when you bang them on the floor and in this sport you do that quite often. They’re fantastic.”

POSITIVE ENERGY DRINK

“It’s an energy drink, like Red Bull, but it has all-natural energy ingredients. Out of all the flavors there are, I’d probably say my favorite one is lemon and lime. I know I’m sponsored by Positive Energy, but it’s very good, very tasty. It fuels my workouts and gives me a little bit of an extra kick when I’m training in the gym.”

RASH GUARDS

“I never wear a gi. I don’t like wearing pajamas (laughs). I do wear rash guards, though, because they’re obviously much more useful for my training. Depending on which one I have available, I’ll wear my Forca Luta or Venum rash guard.”

CLETO REYES GLOVES

“Although I use the Forca Luta gloves for sparring, I actually use Cleto Reyes gloves for pad work. They’re well made and I can throw hard punches with them, without hurting my hands.”
