Issue 112

March 2014

A four-time World Jiu-Jitsu Championships gold medal winner, five-fight UFC vet Vinny Magalhaes was M-1 Global 205lb champion. He shares his best submission moves

1. Vinny (white gi) finds himself in turtle position. Scott has his hands gripped together under Vinny’s chest, his left arm threaded between Vinny’s right shoulder and head, and his right arm between Vinny’s left shoulder and hip.

2. Seeking a straight armbar, Vinny reaches back with his left arm and controls Scott’s right by hooking behind the elbow.

3. Immediately afterward he grabs Scott’s right wrist with his right hand and pushes the wrist down to create space.

4. Vinny turns himself into position by posting on his left foot as he sweeps his right leg through while maintaining his grips.

5. Vinny creates a figure-four by gripping his right wrist with his left hand, enabling him to attack with the armbar.

6. To finish the hold, Vinny presses down with his left elbow as he pushes up with his right hand.

PRO TIP

Speed is vitally important in setting up this move. If Vinny delays at all in finding his grips and spinning into the hold, Scott will have plenty of time to defend.
