A four-time World Jiu-Jitsu Championships gold medal winner, five-fight UFC vet Vinny Magalhaes was M-1 Global 205lb champion. He shares his best submission moves.
1. Scott (black gi) drops back for the elbow-up guillotine, wrapping his right arm around Vinny’s neck so the inside of his elbow is close to Vinny’s throat. Pulling on his right hand up with his left, Scott keeps his left elbow high to help with leverage.
2. As Scott has his left elbow raised, Vinny is unable to utilize the normal guillotine choke defense and drive his near shoulder into Scott’s neck. Instead, Vinny slides his right arm between Scott’s left elbow and chest so he can start to break Scott’s grip.
3. With Scott’s hold on the elbow-up guillotine broken, Vinny can now work to free his head. He wraps his right arm around the back of Scott’s neck and head, stacks up with his legs, pressing his shoulder into Scott’s neck.
4. Vinny finds Scott’s wrist, pulls the choking arm away from his neck and escapes the hold.
