A four-time World Jiu-Jitsu Championships gold medal winner, five-fight UFC vet Vinny Magalhaes was M-1 Global 205lb champion. He shares his best submission moves

1. Vinny (white gi) is in the north-south position, controling Scott by placing his left arm under and around Scott’s left shoulder, having his right elbow pressed into Scott’s right armpit and putting all of his weight onto his chest.

2. Vinny wraps his right arm back around Scott’s right shoulder and yanks upwards. NOTE: If your opponent is wearing a gi you can grab his lapel behind the neck. However, if it’s no-gi you have to hook the shoulder.

3. With Scott’s right arm trapped, Vinny walks himself counter-clockwise and drives his knee into Scott’s ribs. In this position, Vinny pressures down with his shoulder, trapping Scott’s arm between his under arm and hip.

4. Vinny wants to gain control of Scott’s hips so he grabs Scott’s gi-pants with his right hand. NOTE: If your opponent isn’t wearing gi pants, lean over and hook the leg with your arm.

5. Using his free left hand, Vinny pushes Scott’s head down towards the ground, swings his left leg over the top of his head and begins to drop back.

6. Once Vinny falls back, the pressure on the elbow will cause Scott to submit. NOTE: If your opponent turns their right arm in such a way you can’t finish the armbar, switch to controling the arm with your left hand as you would with a normal armbar.
