Issue 109

December 2013

Talk about the right place at the right time. Referee Marc Goddard positions himself perfectly to catch the very moment Ross Pearson’s hand touches down on the canvas prior to a second knee strike from Melvin Guillard scraping cleanly across Pearson’s face. Breaching the Unified Rules’ regulations on knee strikes to a downed fighter, the fight was halted immediately.

But with the first illegal strike causing a deep laceration on the British boxer’s forehead, and the slice dripping blood between Pearson’s eyes, Goddard was forced to call the doctor into the cage, who quickly advised the contest be stopped. What had been highlighted as a potential ‘Fight of the Night’ didn’t even last two minutes. Good thing the explosive strikers have been booked to do it again – this March in London. Has all the blood yet spilled?
