Kenny Johnson is one of the most esteemed wrestling coaches in MMA. Noted for his work with BJ Penn, he’s also taught Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida. He and RFA 135lb champion Pedro Munhoz present the best wrestling techniques for MMA

1. As Pedro steps in on the jab Kenny lowers his level and starts his shot. Kenny keeps his hands up protecting his head. Kenny benefits from Pedro ‘closing the gap on himself’ by shooting as Pedro steps toward him for the jab.

2. Kenny quickly shoots, penetrating deep and secures the single-leg on Pedro.

3. Kenny steps all the way around Pedro’s leg into a Sumo lift position. Note: Kenny’s level is low, back is straight, his head is up and he is tight to Pedro.

4. Kenny keeps a tight grip on Pedro’s leg, lowers his level and explodes his hips forwards, arching his back while looking at the ceiling, executing a perfect lift.

5. At the height of the lift, Kenny switches his right hand from the single, ready to transition to a double-leg.

6. Kenny swings Pedro’s legs out to the side and then up to the ceiling in one motion, capturing the double and driving Pedro’s back to the mat.

7. Kenny takes Pedro to the ground covering and controlling him, landing in side control ready to transition to his next position.
