Fight camp fuel from inside the ice-boxes of champions. ‘Big Country’ reveals the big appetite that fuels his big power.
Name the leading five must-haves in your ice-box?
“Number one is ice, for both drinks and muscle recovery. Second, water, and lots of it. Then I also like to have plenty of chicken, steak and broccoli.”
What do you gorge on?
“Spinach. Yes, just like Popeye. What can I say, I can’t get enough of it.”
What do you cheat with?
“Arugula, or rocket salad. Does that count? Can you cheat with salad? Is that even allowed?”
Do you keep anything other than frozen peas in your freezer?
“Yes, ice. I live in Las Vegas so you’ve got to have plenty of ice, especially in summer.”
What is your favorite bottled sauce?
“Taco Bell Hot Sauce. I’ve tried most hot sauces and this is the winner.”
What dessert do you enjoy?
“Butter Toffee Almonds. They’re good for you, with the almonds. But the butter toffee, well, that ain’t so good – but tastes delicious.”
What is your own signature dish?
“It depends on what day of the week it is. I’m a good chef and can turn my hand to anything.”
What is your favorite meal during fight camp?
“Steak. Red meat works.”
What meal do you eat after the weigh-in?
“It all depends on what city we are in and what food is available. I try not to get superstitious when I compete, and that includes food. Whatever looks good I’ll go for it.”
What food do you look forward to most after a fight?
“Any food that I haven’t been eating during training camp. Again, it’s never the same thing, just the one thing I’ve denied myself that particular camp.”
Which nationality of food is your favorite?
“American, Italian and Mexican, in that order.”
Anything in there inedible?
“Dit Da Jow. It’s a Chinese oil that I use on bruises and sore muscles. I like to keep it cool as it feels better at the end of a long day.”
LOVES
“Steak salad sandwiches.”
