A four-time World Jiu-Jitsu Championships gold medal winner, five-fight UFC vet Vinny Magalhaes was M-1 Global 205lb champion. He shares his best submission moves
1. Vinny (white gi) finds himself in turtle position. Scott has his hands gripped together under Vinny’s chest, his left arm threaded between Vinny’s right shoulder and head, and his right arm between Vinny’s left shoulder and left hip.
2. From here, Scott can attack with a variety of chokes, among other things. Vinny immediately looks to limit Scott’s options by reaching his left arm back then controling Scott’s right arm – gripping the sleeve if wearing a gi, or just hooking tightly around the elbow without the gi.
3. Vinny posts on his right elbow and left foot and sweeps his right leg through – all the while maintaining control of Scott’s right arm.
4. Vinny continues to rotate his body, which pops his head free and allows him to shoot his right arm between Scott’s legs, and wrap his hand around the back of Scott’s right thigh, which will stop Scott stepping over to mount.
5. Sharing the weight between the back of his head and both heels, Vinny bridges, pushing his hips up.
6. Vinny lets go of Scott’s right arm and, maintaining the pressure on Scott’s back with his head, explosively rotates his upper body and then his lower body as he spins around to take Scott’s back – wrapping his left arm around Scott’s waist in the process. Vinny locks up the position by gripping his right wrist with his left hand.
