A four-time World Jiu-Jitsu Championships gold medal winner, five-fight UFC vet Vinny Magalhaes was M-1 Global 205lb champion. Here, he shares his best submission moves.
1. Vinny (white gi) and Scott start with ‘judo control’ – Scott grips Vinny’s right lapel with his left hand, and Vinny’s left sleeve with his right hand. Vinny echoes him, but for this move makes sure to hold Scott’s sleeve on top of Scott’s arm at the elbow.
2. Vinny’s jumping armbar is a cross between jumping guard and a flying armbar, so instead of attacking the arm immediately he first leaps, forcing Scott to take his weight, before he locks his legs around Scott’s waist.
3. Immediately after, Vinny shoots his left arm behind himself and hooks his forearm across the front of Scott’s left leg.
4. Vinny simultaneously swings his right leg around and in front of Scott’s face.
5. Securing his forearm around Scott’s left leg, Vinny pulls it towards his head as he pushes with his legs, forcing Scott to his back.
6. Retaining control of Scott’s left arm, Vinny pushes his hips up to finish the armbar.
PRO TIP
Speed is paramount. If you don’t perform this fast enough your opponent can end up dropping to their knees and you can lose the technique.
