January 2013

We asked four different figures from the MMA universe their opinions on the pressing matters of the moment

The Fighters

JOSEPH BENAVIDEZ Team Alpha Male flyweight, ranked number two in the world 16-3

JEFF CURRAN Celebrating 15 years of active MMA combat in January 33-15-1

PAT MILETICH Currently a commentator, Pat was the first UFC welterweight champion

MICHAEL SCHIAVELLO Aussie journalist known worldwide for his cage-side commentary

1 Anderson Silva seems spoilt for choice regarding opponents at 185lb and in a couple of catchweight matchups. Who would you most like to see him face next?

Joseph Benavidez

“As a selfish fan, I would want to see Jon Jones. That’s kind of a no-brainer for me if I can pick anybody.”

Jeff Curran

“I’d like to see him fight Jon Jones, but I think as far as who he should fight, it’s whoever he wants at this point. I don’t think people can try and call him out.”

Pat Miletich

“The most likely fight for Anderson is GSP. I don’t think Anderson wants to go up to fight Jon Jones because of Jones’ wrestling ability and his size. Silva and his camp know that’s going to be a severe problem.”

Michael Schiavello

“Jon Jones. I want to see Anderson go up in weight or maybe fight a catchweight against Jon Jones. GSP intrigues me, but I think Jon Jones is the best opponent.”

2 So, Jon Jones vs Chael Sonnen is happening. Are you giving the challenger any chance of causing an upset?

Joseph Benavidez

“Chael always has a chance just with his mental toughness, confidence and his takedowns. Jon Jones looks like he’s on another level in every fight, but does Chael have a chance? Heck yeah he has a chance.”

Jeff Curran

“A good wrestler like him can always pull off the upset. I think he’s going to be the old, conservative Chael Sonnen because taking risks didn’t do well for him. He’s definitely got what it takes to ride you out.”

Pat Miletich

“Chael is a good enough wrestler to get the takedown and possibly give Jones a problem on the ground, but more than likely he’s going to run into some serious problems with Jones.”

Michael Schiavello

“No, and he shouldn’t be in there in the first place. To qualify for a title shot in a division you’re not a part of through a TV reality show lessens the integrity of the UFC title. He won’t have a chance to beat Jon Jones.”

3 We at FO know of many fighters whose mothers play an active role in their careers. Do you fall into this category or have a mothering figure in your corner?

Joseph Benavidez

“I am the definition of a momma’s boy. She’s like my best friend and biggest supporter. We talk every day. For sure, she is the biggest inspiration in my life.”

Jeff Curran

“My motivation with my mom was to do exactly what she didn’t want me to, so yes, she played a very indirect role. At the same time, she’s my mom, and I wouldn’t be here without her, so, of course.”

Pat Miletich

“Actually, my mom almost was the only reason I got into MMA. I did want to compete more after I left college, but my mom was having some health issues, and couldn’t work anymore, so I had to start fighting to earn cash.”

Michael Schiavello

“My mom was the reason I got into broadcasting. I wrote to 20 architectural firms for an internship, and none wrote back. She said, ‘You’ve got a good voice. You should do radio.’ I did it and fell in love with broadcasting.”

4 Do you have any 2013 New Year’s resolutions?

Joseph Benavidez

“Not really. I don’t really believe in New Year’s resolutions. I don’t think I need a day and a new year to want to make myself better… I guess I can always try to become a better person all the way around.”

Jeff Curran

“Be healthy and try and get back at it. I want to heal up some injuries and give it another go.”

Pat Miletich

“Start a massive fight organization.”

Michael Schiavello

“Commentate in Pat’s massive fight organization.”

5 The Fighters Only World MMA Awards return in January, what has been your favorite highlight-reel moment from 2012?

Joseph Benavidez

“More importantly, so are the JOBE Awards! But, seriously, I think UFC 151 was pretty badass. That was an unbelievable show.”

Jeff Curran

“Pat Curran’s knockout over Joe Warren could definitely be ‘Knockout of the Year.’”

Pat Miletich

“Ronda Rousey stands out. I called a few of her fights. She took the torch from ‘Cyborg,’ and because of her looks, her ability and her bravado, she’s put women’s MMA on the map even more.”

Michael Schiavello

“I know Ronda Rousey is nominated for a lot of awards. Obviously, she’s very deserving. She’s been so dominant.”
