A four-time World Jiu-Jitsu Championships gold medal winner, five-fight UFC vet Vinny Magalhaes was M-1 Global 205lb champion. He shares his best submission moves.

1. Vinny (top) is in Scott’s half guard – his left leg trapped in between Scott’s legs. He’s using good posture, making sure his hips are low and heavy and has head control.

2. To start the pass, Vinny moves his right arm from underneath Scott’s head to the far side of Scott’s body and starts to remove the bottom of Scott’s right lapel from under Scott’s belt.

3. Vinny feeds the lapel into his right hand and hooks his left forearm under Scott’s right thigh.

4. Vinny shuffles his left foot up toward Scott’s butt, pushing his left hand close enough to Scott’s lapel to grab it again with his left. This restricts Scott’s movement and potential avenues of escape.

5. Vinny returns his right arm to underneath Scott’s head and grabs Scott’s gi at his right shoulder.

6. Posting on his right elbow and left foot, Vinny pops his hips into the air, drives his right knee across the top of Scott’s left thigh and sits his right hip to the mat.

7. Vinny now thrusts his left leg down as he pulls up with his left underhook, pushing Scott’s left leg to the mat and unlocking the half guard.

8. To finish, Vinny steps his left leg backward and out of Scott’s half guard, then rotates his hips to place his knees flat on the mat and keeps his body low to secure side control.
